The impact of psychedelics on IBD

“Psychedelics produce a potent blockade of the inflammation produced by TNF-α in cell and animal models of inflammation.” Recent research suggests that psychedelics like LSD and psilocybin (found in magic mushrooms) can help with depression, anxiety, and addiction. But could they also help people with inflammatory disorders including IBD? Our guts harbor vast amounts of serotonin and also contain associated 5-HT2A receptors (that serotonin and psychedelics drugs bind with). Serotonin in our gut has been associated with inflammation.

The phenethylamine (a type of psychedelic) called DOI has been found to have super-potent immunomodulatory qualities including reductions in inflammatory pathways like NF-κB and TNF-α which are both deeply associated with IBD.
