Lessons from Michael Pollan about Diet
I used to believe that eating all gluten was horrible. Then I tried eating a little highly fermented sourdough. I used to believe all dairy was bad. Then I tried some local goat yogurt at the farmer’s market. I used to believe eating red meat would do more harm than good. Then I ate just a tad of grass-fed organic lamb.
I used to think a lot of things, but then I was lucky enough to have an extended conversation with the legendary Michael Pollan. He said to me “Andrew, you might consider just trying some sourdough and see how you feel.” I took a trip to the famous Tartine Bakery in San Francisco on Michael’s recommendation and bought myself a loaf (scared for what my insides would do to me!). Lo and behold I was okay.
No, I don’t eat much gluten, or much dairy, or really that much meat, however, what they all have in common is that they are real food. Not made in a factory or processed by a corporation.
Michael Pollan says “Eat Food. Mostly Plants. Not too much.”
The power of this quote is profound.
I’ve realized it’s not about counting every calorie or assigning “legal or illegal” to certain things. It’s about listening to yourself, and doing what helps you feel good. It’s about you being happy too. It’s about sitting down, tracking what’s going on, and designing a predictable system for yourself. Let data, science, logic (and yes at times your intuition) guide you, not your emotions or other’s opinions.
Let’s remember we are all individuals with different needs, desires, and frankly, different bodies and minds.
