“Andrew, which probiotics/fermented foods do you take/eat?”

These are the types of questions I get asked at least 5x per week it seems.

My answer: I currently do not take a probiotic supplement as the evidence is quite mixed. However, I do eat some fermented foods like a dash of Kefir every now and then in my smoothie or some kombucha.

Wait! Hold up. Isn’t there like zero evidence to support drinking kombucha for IBD?

Actually, I recently picked up a bottle of GT’s Kombucha upon a friend’s rec (I have no affiliation) and was delighted to see some promising potential on the label and an actual clinically backed strain in IBD (very rare). GT’s contains Bacillus Coagulans GBI-30 6086 (yes those numbers are actually important) – which is the exact strain of this soil-based probiotic to promote Faecalibacterium Prausnitzii an impossible to culture probiotic which is deficient in nearly everyone with IBD. Additionally, it contains Saccharomyces Boulardii (fairly unknown which strain is actually best in IBD, or if that matters) which has also demonstrated promise in IBD. (science in comments)

I’ve tried a few and I feel pretty dang good.

So hat’s off to GT’s for (probably unintentionally) making a clinically relevant drink for IBD.
