Intermittent Fasting and IBD
It seems like more and more these days we are hearing about intermittent fasting as a near-miracle treatment for all sorts of issues. This is where for about 16-20 hours out of your day, you just don’t eat.
There have been multiple studies with positive results and most of the really extraordinary findings have been found in mice. For example, mice who are given a restricted feeding window tend to live about 40% longer than their unrestricted peers. While the longevity findings have not been fully replicated in human trials, many other benefits have been seen. These include immune regulation, reductions in some chronic diseases, and mental clarity.
In terms of IBD, not much research is out there, but there is some indication of reduced inflammation and reduced urgency to go to the bathroom.
Personally, I’ve noticed how much better I sleep when I either skip dinner or eat a light dinner. Many people don’t eat breakfast but for me, breakfast is an important start to my day. In the coming months, I am going to be experimenting more with this and seeing how I feel.
Bottom line is that we don’t fully yet know how interment fasting plays into the claimed benefits, though the best test might just be to give it a try and see how you feel.
