Probiotics and Pandora’s Box

Probiotics are a pandora’s box – a mystery of positive potential and potential issues. Have you ever wondered about all these different bacterial and fungal species listed on your probiotic bottle or on your yogurt? What are they? What do they do? There are thousands of strains out there.

First of all, what’s even in human the microbiome? How do scientists study it? And what do these microbial organisms do for us individually and together?

Do probiotics even work? And if so why do they work? Could they be harmful?

The answer to every one of these questions is this: we don’t really know, but incredible progress is being made.

Probiotics have made their way from alternative to the mainstream and more and more doctors recommend them.

There have been many promising studies especially around diarrhea associated with antibiotic use – but many studies have found no benefit, along with others that have been left unpublished due to lack of results (publication bias), and others that have conflicts of interest.

There is a lot of noise to sift through.
