Let’s all be more like this blue-belly lizard and soak up the sun. This little creature was enjoying the sun so much that I was able to get up close with my iPhone and capture the moment.

It is believed that up to 50% of Americans are Vitamin D insufficient, and that number climbed to 70% in the context of Inflammatory Bowel Disease. Yes, Vitamin D is the new craze because one study found a correlation between COVID-19 severity and low Vitamin D levels, but the truth is we’ve known for a long time that this little ringed molecule plays diverse functions in immune regulation, calcium absorption, intestinal integrity, cognitive function among many other roles.

The latest meta-study in the context of IBD released just this weekend analyzed 12 randomized controlled trials with 611 IBD patients and another 359 patients in observational studies. The study concluded: “Vitamin D supplementation in patients with IBD and vitamin D deficiency is effective at correcting vitamin D levels and is associated with improvement in clinical and biochemical disease activity scores.”

So there’s probably never been a better time get out in the sun (with a bit of sunscreen and at a social distance). It also might be prudent to talk to your health team about a vitamin D supplement.
