My Whole Foods walkthrough and the surprising results

On Saturday – I filmed a “Whole Foods Walkthrough,” for my clients.

I have to say that while it’s one of the best places to find IBD-friendly food – the stunning amount of non-real, non-whole foods was pretty alarming. In so many respects this store no longer holds true to its name.

Here is an example, and this is definitely not an isolated issue. Say you have Ulcerative Colitis and you know you are sensitive to dairy. You are walking through the fresh foods section and you come across some Vegan cheese. “Ah wonderful!” You say to yourself and you pick up a pack of “Daiya – deliciously dairy-free” vegan cheese. You flip the back over where friendly text proclaims “a healthy alternative.” You put it in your cart and continue unknowingly oblivious to the fact that you are about to ingest some of the worst things possible for IBD -backed by science.

Among the ingredients listed are “canola and/or safflower oil” (high in omega 6 and inflammatory), “pea protein” (isolated proteins can often be very hard on IBD and are not allowed on IBD-AID or AIP), “vegan natural flavors” (could be anything – wanna tell us which flavors?), “inactive yeast” (demonstrated to exacerbate Crohn’s and it likely doesn’t matter that its inactive), xantham gum (widely avoided by people with IBD and demonstrated to cause late-onset necrotizing enterocolitis in infants), and probably the worst offender Titanium Dioxide (which potentially highly exacerbates colitis, and is now banned in France as a food additive).

The conclusion is that just because you are at Whole Foods or another “natural” grocery store does not mean you are buying real food.

Always read the ingredients.
